(1933) Along with Johnny Moss and 'Amarillo Slim', one of the 'fathers' of modern poker, he achieved his first successes when this card game was still illegal in the United States.

Member of the Poker Hall of Fame since 1988, throughout his career he won 10 WSOP bracelets (figure surpassed only by Phill Hellmuth, with 13), two of them in the Main Event of the WSOP, and added a World title. Poker Tour, being one of the only 5 players in history who have a tournament of these two circuits.
In addition, he was the first player to win $ 1 million in poker tournaments.
His book "Super / System: How I won more than 1 million playing poker" is considered the most influential book ever written about poker and source of inspiration for many of the best players of today.
